Requirements:

At least 1-2 years experience at such secondary position onboard.

Preferred are graduates from accredited maritime school.

Responsibilities:

Steer ship under direction of ship's commander or navigating officer, or direct helmsman to steer, following designated course.

Stand by wheel when ship is on automatic pilot and verify accuracy of course by comparing with magnetic compass.

Relay specified signals to ships in vicinity using visual signaling devices such as blinker light and semaphore.

Steer ship and maintain visual communications with other ships.

Give directions to crew engaged in cleaning wheelhouse and quarter-deck. Maintain ship's log while in port, and may stand gangway watch to prevent unauthorized persons from boarding ship.
