Requirements:

Experience or apprenticeship/training.

Responsibilities:

Examine machinery for specified pressure and flow of lubricants.

Read pressure and temperature displays, and record data in engineering log.

Assist engineer in overhauling and adjusting machinery.

Turn wheel while observing compass to maintain ship on course.

Record data in ship's log such as distance traveled and weather conditions.

Paint or varnish decks, superstructures, lifeboats, and sides of ship.

Lubricate machinery, equipment, and engine parts, such as gears, shafts, and bearings.

Splice and repair cables and ropes using marlinespike, twine, wirecutters, etc. Lower and man lifeboats in case of emergency.

Load or unload materials from vessel.

Stand watch from bow of ship or wing of bridge for obstructions in path of ship.

May clean and polish wood trim, brass, and other metal parts.
